    The Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was started in 1902 by Max Grabowski.

    It was the manufacturer of some of the earliest trucks and was purchased in 1909 by GM. In 1912 the name GMC was first used at the New York Auto Show and in 1996 the suffix Truck was dropped.

    What most people don’t know is that GMC also makes cars.

In 1909 the company was bought by General Motors to form the basis of the General Motors Truck Company, from which GMC Truck was made. In 1912 the name “GMC Truck” was first shown at the New York Auto Show.

    In 1996 GM dropped the word ‘truck’ from the GMC Truck name, thus creating the GMC name as we know it today. There never was a Grabowski Motor Company or a Grabowski Motor Corp.

    They now make personal automobiles, as well as pickup truck and bus engines.

    General Motors Corporation NYSE: GM, also known as GM, is a United States-based automobile maker with worldwide operations and brands including Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Daewoo, GMC, Holden, Hummer, Opel, Pontiac, Saturn, Saab, and Vauxhall Chevrolet and GMC divisions produce trucks, as well as passenger vehicles.

    Other brands include ACDelco, Allison Transmission, and General Motors Electro-Motive Division that produces diesel-electric locomotives. GM also has stakes in Isuzu, Subaru, and Suzuki in Japan and a joint venture with AutoVAZ (Lada) in Russia. In December 2003, it acquired Delta in South Africa, in which it had taken a 45 percent stake in 1997, and which is now a fully-owned subsidiary, General Motors South Africa.

    GM’s headquarters are in the Renaissance Center in Detroit, Michigan.

    General Motors is the world’s largest vehicle manufacturer and employs over 340,000 people. In 2001, GM sold 8.5 million vehicles through all its branches. In 2002, GM sold 15 percent of all cars and trucks in the world. They also owned Electronic Data Systems from 1984 to 1996 which is a former Ross Perot company and, prior to selling it to News Corporation, DirecTV. GM owned Frigidaire from 1918 to 1979.

    The current chairman (since May 1, 2003) and chief executive officer (since June 1, 2000) is Rick Wagoner, succeeding John F. Smith, Jr.

    General Motors is selling its 20 percent stake in Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent of Subaru, in a deal that could raise more than $700 million as per news released on October 6, 2005.

    Also, General Motors Canada auto workers voted on Sunday to ratify a new contract that will lay off 1,000 workers over the next three years, the Canadian Auto Workers and GM said.

    General Motors lost 2.5 billion dollars last year, and would have made a profit if it was not saddled with 6 billion dollars in health costs.

    The UAW and GM are now reaching agreement to reduce this health cost by about 1 billion dollars annually.

    What is the place of communications in the wake of disaster? For a nonprofit, the answer lies in the way (if any) that organization is involved in the relief effort. Reading news of, campaigns for and other reactions to the tsunami tragedy has shaped my list of guidelines for appropriate nonprofit communications:

    For organizations providing services in the tsunami relief effort: Communicate broadly and clearly about how donations are managed, where they are going and what your organization’s relief effort is achieving.

    Examples:

    Catholic Relief Services responded immediately with life-saving food, medicine, clean water, emergency shelter, basic hygiene and household supplies. This was the first phase of CRS’ phased response — rapid-response relief to save lives, rehabilitation of damaged areas, and development efforts to rebuild communities and livelihoods.[http://www.catholicrelief.org/our_work/where_we_work/overseas/asia/tsunami/index.cfm/]

    Oxfam America solicits donations on its homepage, assuring prospective donors that “over 90% of emergency funds go directly to saving and rebuilding the lives of those in the affected areas.” Oxfam goes further than Catholic Relief Services, linking its call for giving to six content areas, including these moving accounts:

    • A Survivor’s Story– From a camp for Sri Lankans, a survivor describes the tsunami and the work that Oxfam is doing to help.

    • A Personal Reflection – An Oxfam employee who is Sri Lankan reflects on how the disaster is affecting her family.

    • The First Hours– Oxfam staff in Sri Lanka describes the disaster. http://www.oxfamamerica.org/ Make it clear why your organization is well- equipped to help. Be as specific as possible.

    Example:

    Save The Children, with a field office in the Aceh province of Indonesia, was positioned to provide aid in the region before others could arrive. The agency has since expanded its focus to include children in Sri Lanka.

    • Be thoughtful in your use of graphic photos of the disaster.

    The press is working for you by publicizing shocking photos of the disaster (not to mention the home videos floating around the Internet). And there’s quite a bit of controversy among the press regarding this issue.

    Some journalists argue that graphic photos (such as dead children) are too much. Others assert that the seriousness of the disaster necessitate the use of photos to convey the gravity of the situation, especially to the jaded U.S. audience.

    For organizations collecting donations for aid efforts:

    Be proactive and specific in conveying the process for distributing donations and where (and when) the money will be spent.
    Example: My local Jewish Community Center (JCC) distributed a flyer soliciting donations for tsunami relief. Working in conjunction with the United Jewish Communities, the JCC explains that “UJC’s unique partnership with local and overseas agencies enables us to help build and rebuild communities and ensures that we can provide a wide range of support to people at home and around the world.”

    I’d like to know more specifics of how donations will be used for disaster relief and wish that they had included a web address where I could find out more.

    When I go to the UJC site on my own, I get a clear explanation of why it’s soliciting donations (for its overseas aid agency, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee) which is providing non-sectarian aid in the regions by struck the tsunami.     Explain why your organization has chosen to get involved as a pass through for donations. This role, which is probably an unusual one for your organization, has the potential to confuse your established audiences. Help them understand what you are doing, and why. Example: The JCC does a good job of explaining why they are getting involved in donations for relief support — to filter donations to the UJC.
    For other nonprofits continuing with their fundraising and communications pitches:

    Be sensitive to inappropriate pitches. You may actually go as far as to acknowledge the magnitude of the tsunami disaster, and the contributions your prospective donors are likely to have made. In doing so, you craft the opportunity to talk about your issues and/or service recipients and the fact that their needs persist in the face of this terrible tragedy.
    Remember that your audiences have been immersed, whether they have wanted to be or not, in tsunami coverage. No story of yours can be more
    Relate your work to relief work when relevant — but don’t overstate. Make sure you don’t overstate a connection between your organization, services or programs and the tsunami disaster.At the same time, acknowledge the tsunami. Pretending that it didn’t happen is the worst mistake your organization can make.
    Continue with your regular campaigns and press releases. Yep, many journalists are busy with tsunami coverage, even as it relates to nonprofits. But there’s only so much coverage related to this topic. If you have a timely pitch, make it.

    Chrome rims and other chrome parts are often used to improve the appearance of vehicles. The bright decorative finish of chrome plating is very familiar and enhances the appearance as no other method of customising your ride can. Chrome plating is not just used for decoration however. The protective coating of the chrome makes the technique of chrome plating useful for other applications.

    Chrome plating consists of applying a thin layer of chromium on to an iron, copper or other base metal to give a protective and decorative finish. Chromium itself is a reactive metal that reacts readily with the oxygen in the air.     Different electroplating techniques are used to produce different effects. The shiny highly decorative finish that we are all familiar with on chrome rims and other auto parts is known as bright chrome. Other variations are black chrome and hard chrome.

    Bright chrome is used when a decorative finish is required, on car rims for instance, and is applied fairly thinly. Decorative chrome is applied after a nickel coating is plated to a base of steel, copper alloys, steel and aluminum alloys and plastic. The nickel provides the luster and the chrome provides the hardness and protection. This kind of process is used for auto parts, jewelry, hardware, hand tools and appliances.

    Black Chrome

    For black chrome an underlying base of metal is plated with bright or mate nickel then the chromium plating applied over this. Black chrome is not as hard as bright chrome and not so long lasting. It is often oiled or waxed to improve the appearance. Black chrome is used in some auto parts, solar panels and some gun sights and other optical components.

    Hard Chrome

    Unlike the other types hard chrome is not used to give a decorative finish but to give a very long lasting protective coating for pistons, hydraulic rods, cylinders and other engine parts. The chrome is plated more thickly than for the decorative finishes to make a strong protective layer.

    The Electroplating Procedure

    Before the object can be plated it must be cleaned thoroughly by degreasing the cleaning manually to remove any debris and impurities. Sulphuric acid or other strong acids are also used. Other pre-treatments may also be used. Once cleaned the object is suspended in the plating solution. For bright chrome a solution of sulphuric acid and chromic acid is used and for black chrome, chromic acid with acetic acid and barium acetate. The temperature of the bath must be kept within 45C to 50C for bright chrome and 32C to 46C for black chrome. The thickness of the plating is controlled by the current used.

    Donors read postscripts. This is a sad but important reality in fundraising. Sad because the PS is stupid and belongs in another millennium. In this age of word processors, no one needs to add a PS anymore. But important because a donor reading a PS is a donor looking for information. And that’s your opportunity.

    According to direct mail consultant Allyn Kramer, there are five “hot spots” in your direct mail packages where readers look first. Here they are, in order:

    1. Outside envelope

    2. Brochure headline

    3. Inside address (who the letter is going to)

    4. Signature line (who the letter is from)

    5. Postscript

    Since the PS is one part of your letter that you can be confident your donors will read, you need to write something there that will motivate your donor to send you a gift or take your desired action. Here are some ideas.

    Re-phrase your ask in a new way
    Reiterate the deadline for the member’s gift, if there is one
    Point the donor to your website to make an online donation
    Invite donors to refer you to a friend who may support your organization
    Invite the donor to complete the enclosed reply card and envelope
    Remind donors that their gifts are tax deductible
    Invite the donor to join your monthly giving program
    Repeat your case for support in a fresh way
    Include a brief and uplifting story that demonstrates that your supporter’s gift will make an immediate difference
    Invite donors to upgrade their gift
    Offer a free guide on writing a will or making a bequest to your organization, sent to all who send a gift
    Draw your reader’s attention to a section in your enclosed brochure that illustrates your current need and encourages a gift
    Break down the ask into daily amounts (”Your gift of £15 works out to just 50 pence a day”)
    Invite readers to visit your website to complete a survey (and ask for the gift again there)
    Give your phone number or email address and invite the donor to contact you with any questions
    Explain what will happen if you do not receive sufficient funding (without spreading fear and without making your donor feel guilty)
    Thank your members for their ongoing support
    Add a personal note about why you are so passionate about this particular ask–and why you need the donor to send a gift today
    Remind the member about the freemium you’ve enclosed (mailing labels, for example)
    Re-state the size of gift you are requesting
    Explain that supporters can make a donation using their credit cards
    Remind donors of your goal for this campaign
    If you are well into your campaign, tell donors how close you are to reaching your goal–their gift right now will get you even closer
    Tell the donor how much their continued support means to you personally
    Name one of the people your donor’s gift will help (”Children like Samantha need your help. And so do we.”)

    With the FDA clearance of medical devices being stripped off its “stairway to heaven” status, the manufacturers would need to introduce many measures to leave no stone unturned in ensuring quality production.

    However, a contention was raised that if a patchwork approach is employed for medical device approvals it would lead to conflicting labeling and indications on products.

    Further, that more lawsuits and delays in newer technologies reaching patients would eventually raise health care costs.

    Motivating strangers to give their money away is one of the hardest jobs around. It’s difficult to do face to face. And it’s even tougher to do in a letter. But it can be done. And your chances of receiving gifts in the mail increase once you employ some of the tested methods that are used by leading non-profit organizations around the world.

    Make your message relevant

    Your appeal letter needs to talk about what’s important to your donor. Like you, donors listen to what interests them. They watch what interests them. And they read what interests them. There is no reason that what is important to you and what is important to your donor cannot be the same thing.

    Let me give you an example of an organization who got it wrong. A national association raises awareness, provides services and supports individuals affected by diabetes. Research shows that just about every one of their donors either has diabetes or knows someone close to them (father, wife, brother, cousin) who does.

    And yet this national organization continues to mail appeal letters to its donors describing diabetes in the most basic terms. “Over two million people in our country have diabetes,” said a recent letter. “Approximately 10 % of people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes,” said another.”

    If you lived with diabetes and donated to this organization, these appeal letters would be irrelevant to you, wouldn’t they? First of all, you already know about diabetes. And secondly, you don’t care that “Approximately 10 % of people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes” as much as you care that you have it. What this organization needs to do is start writing fundraising letters that speak to their donors where they are now.

    That means crafting letters that help their donors live full lives even though they have diabetes. That means positioning themselves in donor’s minds as the single best source of information for people who have or are affected by diabetes. Doing that would increase their relevance–and their donations.

    By making your fundraising letters more relevant to your supporters, you will stand out amidst the many appeal letters that your donors already receive from other charities.

    Use “make-a-difference” language

    Donors act like investors when they give their money away. They want to know that their gift will produce a return on investment, however intangible. What you are aiming to do with “make-a-difference” language is show why the world is a better place because of your organization.

    In my local newspaper each Christmas, for example, a men’s shelter runs a small display ad that features a photo of a homeless man seated at a dinner table at the mission, eating Christmas turkey. The headline reads: “Christmas dinner: $2.75.” The message is clear. Give a gift of $2.75 and you’ll show compassion in a practical way to a homeless person this Christmas. You can literally “picture” the difference your donation will make. Try to paint a picture like that with each fundraising letter you drop in the mail.

    Empower your donors

    Ever heard of “donor fatigue?” It’s the phrase that fundraisers use to describe the feeling of hopelessness that some donors get by reading fundraising appeals from dozens of worthy causes. The weight of the world’s troubles produces in some donors a sense of futility, believing that their small gift can’t possibly change the plight of so many people worldwide.

    The way to prevent donor fatigue is to write fundraising letters that empower your donors. “Donors are interested in you because of what you help them do. You are their agent in their personal mission to make the world better. That should be the topic of all your fundraising,” says Jeff Brooks, senior creative director at the Domain Group, a direct marketing firm that serves non-profit organizations.

    Show how past donations are at work

    Another powerful motivator is proof that a past gift made a difference and continues to do so. Tell the story of the toddler whose life was saved by the speedy reactions of a nurse. Describe how two bikers left a life of crime and gave up drugs thanks to the intervention of your volunteers.

    What you are aiming for with the printed word is the “feel-good factor.” “When we communicate with our donors, we need to continuously let them know how their gifts make the recipients feel. That sense of making a meaningful difference in a needy person’s life or helping to make a needed change in the world is the gift we give our donors,” says Jeff Nickel, group vice president for Grizzard Signature Group, a direct response fundraising agency.

    Appeal to head and heart

    Many donors are ultimately motivated by their emotions more than their intellect. But to attract and keep loyal donors, you need to appeal to both head and heart. You need to write with passion, appealing to each donor’s sense of compassion and empathy. But you also need to write with clear-headedness, too, mentioning that gifts are tax-deductible, explaining how much of a donation goes to programs and how much covers administrative expenses, sometimes listing the rational reasons for supporting your cause, and so on.

    Raising funds by mail is not a science. Methods change because society changes. People change. But these principles have worked for decades, and still do.
